At The Cedar House, one of our core weekly groups is our journaling group—a quiet hour dedicated to reflection, writing, and turning inward. It’s not a group built on heavy discussion. Most of the time, the room is silent except for pens moving across paper. Yet it’s consistently one of our most well-attended groups, and residents often share how meaningful and clarifying the process is for them.

Journaling gives each person the space to slow down and really see where they’re standing in their story. We use the Hero’s Journey as a guiding framework because it mirrors the recovery process so well—facing challenges, meeting allies, entering the “inner cave,” and choosing the next chapter with intention. When someone begins to understand their life as a story, they often gain new insight, direction, and courage.

This week’s group focused on Winter as a Threshold: a time to look back, get honest about the present, and plant seeds for the spring ahead. Winter invites us inward. It encourages stillness, integration, and the quiet spiritual work of preparing for what’s next.

Here are the journaling prompts we used. I invite you to take a few minutes this season to reflect on your own journey:

Whether you’re in a season of rebuilding, rediscovering, or simply resting, these questions can help you reconnect with your path—and remind you that you are the hero of your story, still moving forward, still growing, still choosing the next chapter.
